Democracy is alive!

In the context of a deep crisis of representativeness and closure of civic space, 9 Latin American countries are going through elections in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, only 48% support democracies in the region: this means a drop of 15 percentage points in relation to the 63% registered in 2010. In addition, 28% expressed that they do not care whether they have a democratic or a non-democratic regime.
Now is the time to reconfigure the democratic bases and the inalienable foundations of our societies: What leadership, institutions and social fabric do we want?
In this context and within the framework of the International Day of Democracy (September 15), CILA participated in Democracia Viva 2023, a space – coordinated by Asuntos del Sur – that gathers, makes visible and connects actions and interventions promoted by governments, organizations, universities, collectives and referents in Latin America.
On September 13, CILA participated in an activity where it presented the No Manual for Activating Democratic Networks: Collaborative Networks in Practice: Activating Democracy Without Manuals, developed by CILA member organizations (Asuntos del Sur, Ciudadanía Inteligente, Extituto de Política Abierta, Pro Comum) in conjunction with Ollin and Instituto del Sur Urbano.
This initiative is part of the Democratic Residencies promoted by People Powered and Demo.Reset. Through them, we were able to have a process of simultaneous residencies in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santos (Brazil) and Santiago (Chile) to carry out a Democratic Innovation Mapping and discover how Latin American organizations work in networks.
From the participating organizations we wanted to go a step further and developed this document with recommendations and useful information to promote collaborative networks without failing in the attempt.
